2️⃣105: Crowdsourcing Feedback 👩🏿🦳👨🏼🦰👩🏾🦱👨🏾🦱👨🏼🦲
it's called "building in public"
hihi, it’s been a minute 🤓
Last time you got some 2UESDAY action, I was caught up naming random NFL/NBA players and bro’ing out.
I haven’t emailed in two weeks because I’ve been swamped figuring out some work things, and by that, I mean I’ve been trying to get more work because these bills need to be paid (more on that next week, big update).
Hopefully, you haven’t forgotten that I committed myself to writing an entire book this year. It’s an idea I’ve been brainstorming for a few years, so when I embarked on this journey I felt I was prepared to crank out this story one month and one chapter at a time.
I won’t beat around the bush; the first chapter I wrote was way too long.
The first chapter I wrote was way too long
I did a quick online search of how long the first chapter of a book should be, and most guidelines say ~2,000 words is the sweet spot. My first chapter was….much longer than that (7,420 words, to be exact).
Here are some of the reviews I got:
My Uncle: papito, it was very creative, pero un poquito muy largo
Bestie: It took me like 4 different bathroom breaks over several days to read, but I loved it!
Another Bestie: I started it….
Lover: Yes…I started it….
I don’t blame you. It was way too long. Looking back, it tried to do too much right from the jump. I stepped back and realized I have three different chapters squeezed into one.
So, instead of pushing through to the next chapter, I’m going to go back and see what we can improve. The first step in that process is asking for subscriber feedback. If you follow the link at the bottom of this email it’ll take you to a Google Doc of the first chapter. I humbly request that you review it and write down any feedback, questions, suggestions, ideas, or anything else you’d like to share. I’ll look over what people wrote and see if it’s useful when writing my next draft.
The comments on an open Google Doc are usually anonymous, but if you dare, please include your name with anything you write so I can get an idea of who it is coming from. Who knows? Maybe one day, if I take your feedback into account, I might compensate you in some form 😉
I’m opening my heart to you, so please be nice. Happy editing ✌🏽😬🫣
